Altitude data isn't in OSM (apart from the height of some mountains). This is because it can't be measured precise enough by us, and it's already freely available anyway.
You can use alternative data like SRTM data. There are OSM formats available, or scripts to convert it to OSM format: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/SRTM Greets, Sander
