the problem frequently comes with redistribution terms. it's one of the reasons
why i have no plans to bring in any of the transit data here in the Capital District
of NY; the CDTA terms are really shaky when you get to the redistribution part.

you need a clear statement that they are willing to relicense their data in terms
compatible with the ODbL

Derek,

Please see http://www.rtd-denver.com/Developer.shtml

If the intention is to provide a free service to the public, RTD’s Transit Data

can be published on any interactive web map, similar to what others have done.

Google Maps – Transit, at http://www.google.com/intl/en/landing/transit/#mdy

Bing Maps – Transit, at http://www.bing.com/maps/transitdefault.aspx

Nokia/HERE – Transit, at http://www.nokia.com/global/apps/app/here-transit/

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Subject: RTD's GIS Data in OpenStreetMap

Hi,

I'm pretty sure you're the wrong contact for my inquiry, but you were
the closest I see to "tech support" on RTD's contact page, so feel free
to redirect me to the right people, if necessary.

I'm writing to inquire about the copyright limits of RTD's GIS data. I
found a page where I can download the data
(http://gis.rtd-denver.com/MapServer/datadownload.aspx) but it says that
the data is copyrighted. What I'd like to do is import that GIS data
into a service called OpenStreetMap (OSM for short). It's a free, open
data source for world-wide maps, that is used for many other services
such as Foursquare, MapQuest, and Craigslist. See http://osm.org and
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenStreetMap for more details.

Currently, there are many RTD stops and routes mapped in OSM, but
nowhere near all of them. It'd be a great if RTD's source GIS data could
be imported. However, the OSM data is licensed under the Open Database
License (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/ODBL), and so I will
probably need to get a license for OSM to use RTD data.

Just to be clear, I do not represent OSM. I am one individual inquiring
about this information. If a larger discussion needs to be had, there
are OSM foundations that I can contact to help me with that.

Please let me know if it would be possible to get permission to use this
data in OSM.

Regards,
Derek Kniffin
