Hi everyone! There have been several conversations in the Finnish OSM forums about importing data from the Digiroad database to OSM. Digiroad is a national road and street database administrated by the Finnish Transport Agency (FTA). Inspired by the conversations we have created a bus stop import pilot project. The purpose of the pilot is to complement OSM's bus stop data with data from Digiroad.
Digiroad is the main database for public transport stop information in Finland. According to a rough estimate, 60% of Finnish bus stop data is missing from the OSM database. In this project, the missing data will be provided to the OSM community for further development and application purposes. In this import, OSM stops will be treated as master data. Thus, OSM stops will not be removed or edited in anyway. To avoid overlapping data, the Digiroad bus stop data will be filtered using common ID-numbers and locations (for more info, please read our wiki!) Data is planned to be imported in two phases. In the piloting phase, we plan to test all the processes with a small test set data. The test set will be imported during October or November 2018 and the exact time of the import depends on the OSM community's feedback. After the import, the Digiroad operator organizes a mapathon event 5th of November at the GIS Expo in Helsinki together with the local OSM community. The aim of the mapathon is to move the Digiroad stops from the original center line geometry location to the actual bus stop shelter or pole location, and more tags can also be added in process. In the second phase, the Digiroad bus stop data gathered from the rest of Finland will be imported after successful and well-received import of the test data. Similar mapathons than in GIS-expo will be organized also after the main import. This import has been planned in the Finnish Transport Agency's (FTA) Digiroad operating service and together with Mr. Erno Mäkinen (Gispo Oy), who has been the consultant for the project regarding preliminary OSM community opinion. Data license is OK. OSM-community has a written permission from the FTA to import the data.
