OK, I have this up and running now, but had a few difficulties that I need to document.  I am using an NT workstations installation and changed the SID of the new machine to match the old.  I also created an ERD on the old machine and attempted to do a recovery on the new machine, but it does not like the ERD from the other machine.  To solve this problem, you can create an ERD on the new machine, delete the sam._ and security._ files on the ERD and replace them with the same files from the old machine's ERD.  The recovery will then be happy with the ERD and you can continue selecting only the security data - verified the last option in the list of choices.  Reboot the machine and you have you complete user/group DB on the new machine.  Just a short note to document it, but I will put together a more thorough document including registry locations for most of the options I have installed when I am completed.

Thanks for the help so far,
Greg

I've used the ERD (well the /repair directory info) to move all of the
users and the group for mail on IMS servers. I ran rdisk on the source
machine, then took that data to the destination machine and booted it into
'repair' mode and then restored the security info. I think it is the last
one in the list once you get to the restore screen, but I'm not sure.

Hello all,

I started this topic a few months ago when I started thinking about the
theory of doing it, but am ready to complete it and need a few more
questions answered. Basically, my setup is on a WinNT Workstation and I
want to set up a duplicate setup with minimum work. I will be
documenting the process including the registry exports and imports
required for the installations I have and will make it available for any
others wishing to do so.

I have a secondary machine set up with WinNT Workstation and I have
changed the SID on the new machine to match the old. I believe this is
necessary - if not, comments are welcome. I have the POP3 service,
SMTPDS, and SMTPRCV installed and the next step I want to tackle is the
transfer of the user database. to the new machine. Any comments on
whether or not the group (IMSUSERS) needs to be created manually on the
new machine, or transferred as part of the export/import with the
users? I have all data from the /repair directory on the live machine.
Has anyone experience in doing this? Is it done through the repair
utility, or a registry export/import? If the ERD data is used is it the
required information contained in 'ntuser.DA_' or 'sam._' or one of the
other files. In short, has anyone experienced the easiest way to do
this task and if you send the info, do you mind if it is used in a
documented procedure for others to study?

Following this, I will document the registry settings required for the
IMS services, SCSMFilter, TrashFinder and any other pieces of software
used that I may have forgotten. I think I have these figured out
already, but if there are any predefined already, I could use them to
check my notes.

Comments welcome...

Thanks,
Greg
