The problem is that the legs² of the GPU chip do not hold well to the logic board. Hence the impromptu solution of putting the cardboard piece to force the GPU to make contact with the logic board. Then the aluminium shielding has to be pressed on to this cardboard gently but firmly to force the GPU to make contact with the logic board
The problem of freezing and multiple colors appearing intermittently is that pressure on the GPU to the logic board is not uniform (and hence the contacts of various legs are not uniform) and hence the cardboard needs to be reseated However would suggest to avoid the cardboard but stick a double sided yellow (make it double or triple) and stick it to the inside of the aluminium shield so that it would come just over the GPU. Do not stick anything on to the GPU or the logic board since the glue may melt with the heat or may catch dust or moisture. Also cardboard will attract moisture DISCLAIMER: This is not recommended by Apple and I am not Apple. Do it at your own risk. If your iBook becomes a paperweight after this procedure, please do not hold me responsible.
