The letter i actually meant for "internet". When Steve returned to Apple, it was the period of internet boom and he wanted to make a desktop that would get people easily onto the internet. Bcoz in those days people had to do upgrades like adding network cards, etc to get wired. So he made the iMac to take advantage of the internet revolution. All you had to do is plugin a cable.
Its a different story that now everything starts from i but initially i meant for internet. I read this in a TIME magazine article on Steve Jobs.
