Without knowing which mac you have and your hardware specs, it's difficult to
give you specific help. You can try the methods from this link >

http://www.maclife.com/article/feature/25_ways_speed_your_mac

Some of the obvious things you can try are resetting permissions, reduce the
number of start up items, delete unnecessary apps and data (especially movies
and music), clean caches, history, logs, etc etc. You can use Onyx (free) to
do some of this for you, although a lot of this work is already done by the mac
itself, but you could tweak the maintenance scripts if you want. There's no
guarantee that any of this will help. If your machine is old, it might help to
backup all your data on an external drive and clean install the OS, then wean
out unnecessary apps and data before putting them back on your machine.

If you have a device syncing to iTunes (iphone, ipad), delete apps that you
don't use from iTunes on your machine. You can always re-download them for
free if you ever need them again. Just as an example, I have almost 200 apps
on my iPad, but regularly use only about 30% of them. The rest are taking up
unnecessary space on my device and on the computer.
