My apologies for the tardy response.
The -dev list must be used for project-specific communication between
project committers. There's a couple of reasons for this in addition to
the very good reason provided by Andreas... First, to join the "dev"
list, participants agree that contributions are governed by our Terms Of
Use. This provides some legal cover when ideas (or even small bits of
code) are used in implementations (note that if you take code off of a
mailing list, you still need to go through the Eclipse IP Due Diligence
process). Further, these communications contain important information
that must be maintained indefinitely, and by keeping archives under our
webmaster control, we are insulated from changes in business plans, etc.
of third-party providers.
Communication with the user community is more flexible. You really do
need to go where the users go. You don't need to keep the forum, but if
you do, please make sure that it is monitored regularly. If you do
decide to use an external service for this sort of group, as much as is
possible, please make sure that the web presence conforms to the
trademark guidelines (e.g. include a trademark message "RDF4J is a
trademark of the Eclipse Foundation").

Hi,
During Eclipse project initiation, the webmaster created the standard
new fora for us to use: the rdf4j-dev mailinglist, and the RDF4J web
forum at https://www.eclipse.org/forums/index.php/f/316/ .
My question is: is there any preference from within the Eclipse
community to switch to these new fora, or can we (as is our current
preference) continue using our existing groups? Are there any advantages
that I may be overlooking to switch to these?
I think having the developers list (as opposed to the user list) here at
eclipse.org makes sense, in particular as there are a few processes that
send mails to rdf4j-dev (committer elections through the Portal, for
example).
I don't know whether these processes can be configured to use a
different mailing list or whether they always use the eclipse.org list.
If the latter, every developer has to stay subscribed to both
[email protected] and the Google group to not miss out on anything.
Hope that helps.
Andreas
