I am luckily not in such a situation, but I think it is a valid

There actually is an answer. Please see
https://eclipse.org/projects/dev_process/development_process_2010.php#4_7_Committers_and_Contributors
(emphasis added)
At times, Committers may become inactive for a variety of reasons.
The decision making process of the Project relies on active
committers who respond to discussions and vote in a constructive and
timely manner. _The Project Leaders are responsible for ensuring the
smooth operation of the Project. A Committer who is disruptive, does
not participate actively, or has been inactive for an extended
period may have his or her commit status revoked by the Project
Leaders._ (Unless otherwise specified, "an extended period" is
defined as "no activity for more than six months".)
That said, I believe that a project leader removing a committer without
their consent is a rare occurrence. But I also believe that the
development process clearly states the roles, responsibilities, and process.
