As a Linux refugee, Blastwave's findutils is one of the first things I add to a fresh SXCE. I had dinner with some Debian admins last night, and when I asked them what they meant by the "user-unfriendliness of Solaris", the missing 'locate' was one of the first things they thought of.

'glocate' is incredibly useful in finding your way around an unfamiliar system... especially when the binary you're looking for could be in any number of /usr/*/bin directories.

A very small point - I liked the rest of your post.
