Hello,
I'm a beginner to OpenSolaris, although I've used a bit Nexenta in a VM a while
ago in order to test a program on an OS of the Solaris family.
My OS of choice has been (GNU/)Linux with KDE or Xfce WMs for the past two
years or so.
Yesterday, I did a quick test of the Indiana Developer Preview 1 on my Asus
F3Jv-AS022P (Centrino 2 Duo T7200 @ 2 GHz, 2 GB RAM, NVIDIA Geforce 7600). I
ran the LiveCD, without installing on a primary partition (I had to make room
for that first). I focused mostly on the hardware detection.
On the positive side:
* the full resolution of 1440x900 was activated out of the box.
* Wi-Fi ("wpi0"): Intel 3945ABG works out of the box.
* Ethernet ("rge0"): RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit works out of the box.
There's a problem with manual DNS settings, as someone else reported on the
Bugzilla.
On the negative side:
* no support for ext2/3 partitions ?
* no sound (and no codecs...), I added my computer's hardware info in bug #121,
while running from the OpenSolaris LiveCD.
* apriori no support for a SD/MMC/etc. card adapter (the SD card won't appear
in the disk usage application). I didn't make a bug report yet, but its
hardware info appears in bug #121 along with the rest.
I couldn't test the Bluetooth adapter because I don't have any Bluetooth
devices.
I'll test the LiveCD on an older laptop. A significant number of (GNU/)Linux
distros over time have had trouble using its 1024x768 screen correctly (i.e.
without using an incorrect refresh rate which makes the screen flickery and
significantly cut out on the right), so I think it's an interesting test.
Browsing this forum and the Bugzilla, I've seen that there are still several
rough edges that I haven't stumbled across in my very shallow testing, but the
project looks promising :)
I too think it would be good to have intermediate releases (once per month ?)
with some bugs fixed and maybe new features added.
Regards, Lionel Debroux.
