I think a conversation on determining target system requirements might be helpful.
Keep in mind that when determining system requirements for installation that several factors can dramatically affect the results: * Type of Install (GUI / Text) * Architecture (SPARC, x86, AMD64) * Install Media Type (Live CD-based / Installation Only) * Media Source ( CD, DVD, Network ) * Performance Goals ( Lower memory requirements typically mean a slower install ) I have created a page on genunix.org's wiki that may help when discussing system requirements among Solaris/OpenSolaris and various popular GNU/Linux, and *BSD distributions. http://www.genunix.org/wiki/index.php/Distribution_System_Requirements_Matrix A few quick observations: For Text installations: * Minimum is "NetBSD": requires only 4MiB of memory. * Maximum is "SXDE 09/07": requires 512MiB of memory. For GUI installations: * Minimum is "Debian": requires only 64MiB of memory. * Maximum is "SXDE 09/07": requires 768MiB of memory. When responding to this thread, please carefully consider your words and be prepared to backup your suggestions with references to specific websites, market research, etc. Posting comments such as "I think Indiana should install on 4MiB like NetBSD just because!" is not realistic. Please provide a justification; who you believe the target audience to be, etc. Also keep in mind some of the factors I mentioned earlier that can affect installation.
