Bob, This is a problem regardless of distribution. Performing the aforementioned linking creates licensing issues for developers that want to target the distribution and confusion over what licensing is effective. Even though a distribution may be done by the community, it still needs the same sane restrictions that a vendor might choose because of these issues. It is my belief that the restriction should remain the same as others have chose; that is, to not do so to avoid the problems it creates. Others might feel differently, but as a developer, I would be rather upset if a distributor created this sort of mess for me by choosing to link a GPL library to a LGPL application. This problem has created issues for projects other than our own even: http://trac.perian.org/ticket/88 However, if you look here, you will see that several possible solutions to this mess have presented themselves: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=413705 -- Shawn Walker, Software and Systems Analyst http://binarycrusader.blogspot.com/ "We don't have enough parallel universes to allow all uses of all junction types--in the absence of quantum computing the combinatorics are not in our favor..." --Larry Wall _______________________________________________ indiana-discuss mailing list [email protected] http://mail.opensolaris.org/mailman/listinfo/indiana-discuss
