As alumni of BSI and having closely worked with ZSI, I am aware of the problems but still have great faith in the organisations esp. in the treasures they hold. Let us all take time to read and comment on the draft report which is downloaded from ZSI site and attached here. THE DEADLINE FOR FEEDBACK IS 28 SEPTEMBER. Aparna Mail from Prof. Gadgil: Dear Friends, I currently have the privilege of chairing two Task Forces appointed by Min of En & F to suggest measures for strengthening the Botanical and Zoological Surveys of India. After extensive consultations, we have now produced a draft report. This was examined in depth by a group of young and senior BSI/ZSI scientists, as well as the Task Force members at Jodhpur on 11th September. While, of course, many suggestions have emerged, there was a broad support to the text of the draft report. We would now like to get further inputs from the entire community of Systematic Biologists (in the broader sense of including ecologists, conservation biologists, biogeographers, etc) of the country. To this end, the report is being posted on the websites of Min of En F, BSI and ZSI. I would be most grateful if you would yourselves provide further suggestions, as also bring this draft report to the notice of any of your interested friends and request them to provide their suggestions. While offering the suggestions, kindly open my draft, activate 'Track changes' mode, and insert your suggestions as appropriate. This would greatly facilitate my incorporating your inputs in the final version. Additionally use the matter: ‘BSI/ZSI TF’ in the subject line of the message to me. Kindly let me have your feedback by Monday, 28th September, 09. I will then look at all the feedback and prepare a pre-final version for consideration in our final meeting.
