Cosmopolitan family of herbaceous plants. Main conc. in north temperate
zone.
Leaves commonly in rosette, entire, often bearing simple or compound
glandular hairs. Flowers often born on leafless stems, or scapes, solitary
or in umbel or clusters.Sepals 5 fused in a tube with teeth. 5 petals fused
in small or long corolla tube with 5 spreading or sometimes reflexed lobes;
stamens 5 fused to corolla tube. Ovary of 5 carpels. Fruit 5 valved capsule.
