Dear friends, please bear with elaborating the fuss with *RADIATA* and *
MUNGO* ... however the confusion seems to be reigning.

A line at Wikipedia throws slight light over the confusion:
Urad (*Vigna mungo*), ... It, along with the mung bean, was placed in *
Phaseolus* but has been transferred to *Vigna*. It was at one point
considered to belong to the *same* species as the mung bean.

We have the following as fact:
*Vigna radiata* (syn. *Phaseolus radiatus*) ... MOONG, GREEN GRAM
*Vigna mungo* (syn. *Phaseolus mungo*) ... UDID, URD, BLACK GRAM

All this ado raised a few queries in my mind:

1) what could be the reason for mistaking identities of *moong* and *urid* ?

2) on what basis are the facts ascertained (that *V. mungo* is *urd* and *V.
radiata* is *moong* ) ?
3) why the reverse naming (i.e. why was mung not named *Vigna mungo*) ?
4) is the epithet *mungo* commemorative for the Scottish explorer of the
African continent, Mungo Park (1771 – 1806) ?
... if so, what were the regional (native) names of mung called earlier to
coining the epithet.
5) how many other species share this epithet ? ... could not get any search
results for floral species ... fauna, some species of mongoose.

Regards.
