TWO GOOD POINTS< PANKAJ >>>

AGREE>>> SEEDS ARE NOT ALLOWED ACROSS INTERNATIONAL BORDERS fro many
reasons..two most important to my mind is : Possible disease
carrier... and Stealing of Intellectual property rights of tribal
knowledge if it happens to be a documented herb or tree...

CAUTION... I had said that when that french kid was asking for seeds
from India.. but nobody supported me or my argument in those
threads... ... at that point I decided why should I be the ONLY
policeman of this group...let everybody's conscious decide what's good
for the country and its folk's intellectual property rights...

BUT PONGAMIA if healthy ... would be welcome... so we can grow
healthy ones in Bengal...
YET your caution about street trees is valid that they may not be
healthy...
better to get such saplings from certified ..

BECAUSE all the pongamias I have seen in Bengal. and Gujarat have
some sort of very ugly looking round brown spots on the upper surface
of leaves ???/ what causes them? DO YOU KNOW?

Usha di

Pongamia ...my grand dad used to say was the toothache tree... when
your toothaches make a "datun " from its twig and chew on it for a
while ,let saliva with the juices of the twig work on your gums and
teeth... . and brush your teeth with it... BUT those ugly spots...
phew..yuk.. don't feel like putting that twig in the mouth...!!!!
Such ethnobotanical use has been documented...by Vaidya... and my
documentation is in my notes... many villagers in Gujarat at least do
this, I have documented in Jamnagar.. and I even followed two of the
villagers for three weeks... and arranged to have them check by a
local dental NGO ...
