"It will be a gross mistake if any parties try to attack the UN force," washington spokesperson, Joe Lockhart, said here Friday local time. About reports that the militias are ready to kill the multinational troops, perticularly those hailing from Australia, Lockhart stressed that "our reaction is that it (the threat) is totally unacceptable." Lockhart admitted that the multinational force is assigned a very difficult mission because it has to restore security and order in East Timor, now very much disrupted by the militias. "This, however, is a UN mission deployed powerfully and authorized to do anything in selfdefence," he said. Misunderstanding Foreign Minister Ali Alatas, in his meeting with Robinson Thursday (Sept 16) straightened out a likely misunderstanding, which could be construed as if the Indonesian government had agreed to establish the investigation commission. According to Alatas, what has been agreed upon with Robinson during her recent visit to Jakarta is not the establishment of an international investigation commission, but rather an examination which will be conducted by Indonesia's National Human Raights Commission, which is an independent commission. "Obviously, it is not about the establishment of an international commission, but it is a national effort," he streessed. However, he went on, the National Human Rights Commision may seek the assistance of international experts in conducting a probe into the alleged human rights violations in East Timor. "It is we that will conduct the probe, not an international team," he added.
