Compactions are not likely to be user controllable in 1.x, although there
may be a command added to trigger a compaction early. There shouldn't be
query blocking during a full compaction, and a shard receiving writes will
not undergo a full compaction.

As for disk full issues, that should be handled with retention policies,
not compactions.
