Mystery solved. Indeed, it was a clean install of InfluxDB 1.1.0 on a "fresh" Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. What I didn't know was that version 0.10 had already been installed from the Ubuntu repository and then uninstalled. Apparently, the uninstall did not remove everything. Thank you for the help.
