Sorry, I can't provide a _good_ solution. 

We did the same hack for the imap and pop servers in
        ftp://ftp.cac.washington.edu/pine/pine3.96.tar.gz

You can find the source code in /afs/uni-hohenheim.de/sw/src/imap-3.x.afs.hoh.
Executable binaries for SOLARIS 2.5 are in
/afs/uni-hohenheim.de/sw/sun4_55/imap-3.x.afs.hoh/sbin.
These binaries run okay on a SUN Ultra 1 as pop and imap server.
