at UM ITD we have a ~42,000 entry passwd file, and most unices search
it linearly. although there is a copy of /etc/passwd in AFS, for
heavily-used machines we copy the AFS version into a local UFS.
some machines on campus use a dbm, and we're working on another
database-style method for speeding up the search for some of the
heavily-used machines.
