My experience is that upgrading my servers from 3.3 to 3.4beta broke
most if not all clients that were still at 3.2. Some broke completely.
Others seem to work for many operations, but can't access certain volumes
and log interminable RX: errors.

Ay-yup.

I was told by Transarc that backup can be upgraded to 3.4beta ahead
of the rest of the server processes. In order to do this I was told
to upgrade buserver on database servers, butc on tape machines, and
backup on any clients that would be issuing backup commands. I
ended up not going that route, but did consider it for a short-term
solution.
