I suppose that if your filespace turns over so quickly that the .backup
volumes would present a significant overhead then I suppose you could delete
them. (although one wonders that if there is so much turnover if a backup
is even necessary).
The one advantage that I have seen at MIT is that the .backup volume is
mounted in the top level of the users volume and if they make a bad mistake
(i.e. rm * ~) the user could recover without administrator intervention.
This gives users a pseudo grace period to recover from errors easily.
