Thanks to all who responded (Judy Warren <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>,
[EMAIL PROTECTED], R Lindsay Todd <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>). It turns out
that *my* problem was that I'd turned on password shadowing, but didn't put
non-local (i.e. AFS user) entries in /etc/shadow. It doesn't matter _what_
you put as a password (as long as it's not '*' or the empty string), but
IRIX xdm login wants an entry. I'd posit that this is broken behavior...

So -
if you use password shadowing on IRIX, make sure any user you want to be
able to use xdm login has an entry in /etc/shadow.

Don't forget about the 8 character password length limitation!
