In addition to sysctl, there is ADM available in
        ftp://ftp.andrew.cmu.edu/pub/adm

which performs the same task with a slightly different
architecture. The programming language for ADM is Scheme (a dialect of
lisp) and that could be viewed as a positive or a negative depending
on your disposition.
