The changes I am making to the salvager are simply to use lseek2(),
rather than lseek() when compiling with the SunOS 4.1.3 ODS libserver.
None of the command line options have been touched.

But, funny you should note that -showmounts isn't documented.
-showsuid and -showlog are documented in the AFS 3.4 release notes as
new options, but not -showmounts. salvager -help does list it:

Usage: salvager [initcmd] [-partition <Name of partition to salvage>] [-volumeid
<Volume Id to salvage>] [-debug ] [-nowrite ] [-inodes ] [-force ] [-oktozap ]
[-rootinodes ] [-salvagedirs ] [-blockreads ] [-parallel <# of max parallel partition
salvaging>] [-tmpdir <Name of dir to place tmp files >] [-showlog ] [-showsuid ]
[-showmounts ] [-help ]

Bob> More importantly, is it a supported option?

I'm assuming so. If they put this into the production binary, I will
implicitly assume it is supported, and that the bug is in the lack of
documentation for it.

We found this option while reading the source code for the salvager.
One of the luxuries of having the AFS source tree is the ability to
poke around and find all the little things they don't compile and
release by default, and/or undocumented command line options.

I will ask Transarc why -showmounts isn't documented. Others should
do the same.
