| Hi!
|
| We'd like to buy a HP DAT Jukebox HP C1550A consisting of a HP DAT drive HP
| C1533A and 6 tape slots. Since AFS 3.4 it is possible to use the AFS backup
| together with jukeboxes by using the MOUNT and UNMOUNT commands. They call a
| user definable shell script which should change the tape.
|
| However, our local dealers tell that there is no way to change the
tape in an
| easy way. Instead, they need to develop a special driver software
which tells
| the drive to change the tapes. This will cost a few hundred US $.
|
| Does anyone knows, if the software delivered together with the tape
drive can
| handle tape change requests (e.g. through a special /dev/xxx)? Is there
| software delivered with the tape? Has anyone sucessfully used this
jukebox to
| make AFS backups?
|
| Thanks,
| Till

When you order the device from Artecon, you get with it a utitlity
called 'stackutil'
It does insert/eject/reset from a command line.
To automate our AFS backup I use the butc 3.4 callout facility with a
script that makes
the approriate calls to stackutil
ie
stackutil status > /tmp/status # to get status
stackutil eject # to eject a tape from the drive into the
magazine
stackutil insert number # to insert tape "number" from the magazine into
                                   the drive

But note that one has to insert some delays here and there as the
interlocking between the drive (on one SCSI lun) and the changer (on
another lun) is not 100%
