AFS 3.4a backup has the ability to automate dumps. The only catch is
that the administrator must write a script (a MOUNT script) that tells
the tape device to switch to another tape. So it does what you asked
which is execute a set of commands (the MOUNT script) when butc needs a
tape.
I did a presentation on this at Decorum 95 and my slides can be found in
the proceedings. I've also placed my slides in
"/afs/transarc.com/public/morin/Decorum/" with example tapeconfig and
MOUNT scripts in the "backup/" subdirectory. The slides are a little
out-of-date and contain incorrect information (specifically with
permanent tape names) since the presentation was done well before the
release, but most of the information is relevant.
The 3.4 release notes also tells you how to setup the backup system for
automation.
