Hi. I just found out interesing features when loggin in with
more than 8 characters user name. I don't know if it's a bug or just a
normal case, but I'm curious why this happens.
An AFS user who has a user name which contains 9 characters reported
yesterday to me that he can't telnet to AFS client machine though he can
use the machine from console. At first, I guessed it's caused by a kind of
kas DB corruption, but it's not. With my user name (of course, it's less than 8
charaters long) I can login from everywhere. And then I could find out
the difference in the name length.
It seemed that ftp and mail services are OK even in long name cases.
But I think it's somewhat irritating when some users can't login only
because of his username's length.
I'd like to hear how this kind of problem is experienced and solved
by what kind of policies. Do I need to always set new users' names less than 9
characters? Does the problem can be solved in other ways? It's more than
just curious. Thanks in advance.
Jay Kim,
Sincerely
