This really depends on your operating system and other things.  I've found
that having login names greater than 8 characters tends to break a number
of utilities in strange and subtle ways.  If you use NIS for passwd map
distribution, it doesn't work well at all.

The best advice I've seen is: Try it, and see if it works.  If it doesn't,
(as in your case), then don't do it.  As a general rule, I think it's probably
a good idea to keep login names to 8 characters or less.
