Have you checked your machine's /etc/nsswitch.conf file? On the line
that starts with "passwd:" you should have-
passwd: files nisplus
"files" causes the local passwd file to be searched while "nisplus" causes
the nisplus database to be queried. Alternatively, you could also have-
passwd: nisplus files
The difference with this is that a nisplus query is issued first, followed
by a search of the local /etc/[passwd|shadow] files if the nisplus query
fails.
