I had this same problem and FINALLY was able to get it to work...

Forget about compiling it with gcc. Never got it to work.

Use the vendor supplied cc, and it works fine. 

I have been able to build ssh with the afs support on: hpux 9, hpux 10, 
aix 3.2.5, solaris 2.5, linux 1.2.3, sgi irix 5.3
