Hi Ed,
With AFS, file locking works but byte range locking with a file does not.
I encountered no locking problems delivering mail into /afs using
auth-sendmail [1].
We did not need POP because auth-sendmail delivers onto $HOME/.mail.
Users were able to run any MUA (elm, MH, netscape, etc) that worked
with normal UNIX mailbox format by simply setting the value of shell
variable MAIL to $HOME/.mail
