Hi,
I'm looking for info about Sparc storage arrays, afs3.3 and afs 3.4a
compatibility stuff, Sun FDDI configuration parameters and a few other
bits and pieces.
Our cell currently consists of 7 Sparc 20's running SunOS 4.1.4 and
afs3.3 with 32GB of Seagate Barracuda on each server.
I just got another Sparc 20 running Slolaris 2.5.1 up connected to a
Sparc Storage array with 18x 2GB disks. It's connected to the network
with a SBus FDDI connector. I'm running version 4.0 of the FDDI
software. I would like to use this as a fileserver (only, no DB's) to
house very large (2GB) volumes on very big (10-20GB?) partitions under
afs 3.4a. The applications which will use the large volumes do fairly
massive sequential reads/writes. I have several questions:
0./ Does anyone use Sparc Storage arrays. If so, what management
software do you use, the storage Volume Manager s/w (I have version
2.1.1) or Online: DiskSuite?
1./ Anyone know if I need any special patches?
2./ How do you configure your disks? What RAID level? I was thinking of
either 5 or 0+1 for a pair of internal disks with the OS on them, and
RAID 0 for the disks in the storage array for the afs partitions.
Exactly how what use do people make of the volume Manager? (the
configuration options seem endless).
3./ Anyone know of any probles running a Solaris 2.5.1/afs 3.4a file
server machine in a cell where all the other machines are SunOS/afs 3.3?
4./ Any tips about trying to optimise the FDDI performance?
Any help would be gratefully received, I asked Transarc these questions
ages ago and havn't had a reply yet.
We are currently suffering a frequently recurring problem where the
servers fail to break callbacks when files are written, resulting in out
of date or corrupt files on some clients. Anyone seen this? We also know
of a fairly big security bug regarding the use of .forward files which
lie in afs, I don't want to post the details but I'm prepared to spill
the beans to any afs administrators who are interested.
Finally, check out SparcLinux. It's great. Anyone working on an afs
client for it?
Thanks,
