For a large site with a single signon (or password) policy, that
wouldn't be very desirable... Not for us, at least...

We run it using local storage for POP users (separate from AFS disk
space) and we use SERVER_MODE and as of recently we store mail in
/var/mail/s/u/subdirectories.
I should point out, though, that we're slowly migrating to IMAP instead
of POP--yes, again with local mail storage instead of in AFS. This is
using the Cyrus server from CMU.
So we're slowly moving away from having mail stored in AFS, although
certainly the majority of our users (including me) still do this. Our
POP and IMAP users are currently a minority. We're still an AMDS site
(part of "Andrew", also from CMU), so that's how we do our delivery into
AFS.
