In my last email I said that AFS is the biggest remaining problem.
I was wrong - I forgot how often Netscape crashes. (It just did.)
Fortunately, when Netscape crashes, it usually doesn't bring down
the entire system. I just swear, write a bug report, and restart
Netscape.
When AFS causes a system problem frequently the whole world gets
hosed, and I have to reboot.
I rebooted a lot more often before
I figured out that the problem was usually AFS tokens expiring,
and that reacuiring the ticket/token, and then carefully saving
everything, exitting all applications such as Word, and starting them
off again usually made the problems go away.
Restarting applications like Word after loss of AFS token is best because
things like the auto-save demon often disable themselves. (In the form of
a dialog box that says something like "Auto-save can't work because of
file permissions. Disable, or Retry in 5 minutes? (Y/N)" which often
pops up and gets whatever character I was planning to type next at my Word
document. I *hate* such dialog boxes.)
