Thanks to all who responded!
Here are the steps to take to move the volumes:
1) Hook disks to new AFS server.
2) Run vfsck on the AFS disk partitions.
3) Mount the AFS disk partitions.
4) Run bos salvage on the AFS partitions.
5) Issue a `vos syncvldb' on the new server.
Simple as that.
But here are the pitfalls: At least under Digital Unix, for step 4) to succeed,
/vicepx MUST have an entry in /etc/fstab. Simply having /vicepx mounted is not
sufficient. We had removed all /vicepx entries from /etc/fstab in order to
prevent any non-AFS fsck from havocing AFS partitions (it can happen that
applying patches to an OS substitutes vfsck by the generic fsck -- with
desastruous concequences). This stopped the salvager from working correctly.
