AFS daemons are normally started at boot time.
On my system, I have a /etc/rc.afs run command file
that is executed from /etc/inittab.
I think it unlikely that your six AFS daemons
are degrading your system's performance.
Try doing some performance analysis using
commands "top", "vmstat".
Otherwise, a reboot may help.
