The issues, as far as I know, are two:
1.  SunOS ships with UDP checksums disabled, which is fairly likely to
result in corrupted data fetched **from** Sun servers over long-haul
connections.
2.  Convex folks are trying to fetch files over a piddly 56KB line from
a 3.1b server.  RX used to just barely work at 56 KB, and only if there
wasn't much congestion or else the chunk sizes were small.  The OSF had
a special version of AFS 3.1b _with these particular changes_
incorporated.

As far as these two facts go, I'm not shooting in the dark...
