our users don't like doing this, either; fortunately, only a handful
have to work this way.

directories which are "system:anyuser read" are apparently visible
without authentication, so this may help some ... but not much.

it seems the AFS/NFS translator was not meant for serious use; if it
was, this situation would have been handled better ...
