At our site we have many large datasets and we would like to create
AFS volumes as large as possible and still backup these volumes
with the AFS backup facility.

Unfortunately, AFS has a 2 G limit on AFS partitions and volume sizes.
Given that we cannot change this fact, how large can a ReadWrite
volume be if we are backing up the data using and AFS backup volume?

What is the maximum size of an AFS backup volume? There is no
way to display the size of the backup volume, as far as I can tell.
In the worst case scenario, can an AFS backup volume be as large
as the ReadWrite volume? If this is true, then the maximum
AFS volume size is less than a Gigabyte since backup volumes are
by default created on the same partition as the ReadWrite volume.
A maximum volume size of 900MB or so is really very small given our
needs.

The alternative to creating an AFS backup volume is to lock the
original ReadWrite volume, making it inaccessible to users,
while the volume is being written to tape. This option is
even more unpalatable than small volume sizes.
