I've noticed that kernel patches for Suns need to be compiled separately
for sun4, sun4c, and sun4m. Using a kernel object file intended for one on
another will link successfully into a kernel, but the resulting kernel
will panic not long after the relevant module gets exercised. I have
a feeling this has something to do with memory management being done
differently on the three SPARC variants.

Programs that live above the kernel level, on the other hand, do work
across all SPARCs; from my experience this is true of "system" programs
(like login and rpc.mountd) as well as "non-system" applications. I can't
say for sure whether or not the AFS executables can be shared between the
two, but I think that any differences you do find will be more attributable
to changes between operating system versions, rather than hardware differences.
