Aside from the slowness of any networked file system protocol,
AFS and NFS both choke at the 2 Gb barrier.  Neither are capable
of carrying a seek offset that expands past what a 32-bit long
can carry.  You need some kind of disk striping supported by
the Sun kernel.  I have no idea how you get that on a Sun.

BTW, what made you think RAID is necessarily slow?  It can be
if poorly implemented or if you can't select simple striping
without parity drives.
