I have noticed something strange when I ftp from a non-AFS
machine to an AFS machine. I give the userid and password
of the AFS machine which access ftpd.afs and authenticates
the AFS user. However, when I begin to give ftp commands
such as cd, pwd, ls, etc., it appears as though the responses
lag the commands by several commands. For example, the
following session shows what I mean:

riosems% ftp rers02.re.deere.com
Connected to rers02.re.deere.com.
220 rers02 FTP server (Version 4.162 Tue Nov 1 10:50:37 PST 1988) ready.
Name (rers02.re.deere.com:emsuser): goeringh
331 Password required for goeringh.
Password:
230
ftp> cd /bin
}h
ftp> ls
250 CWD command successful.
200 PORT command successful.
ftp> ls
150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for /bin/ls.
ftp> ls
226 Transfer complete.
200 PORT command successful.
ftp> ls
(. . .)
ypcat
ypmatch
yppasswd
ypwhich
zcat
226 Transfer complete.
ftp>

This causes problems when a user attempts an ftp and doesn't
wait for the responses to catch up. Sometimes they just
ftp into a machine, cd, and get -- this doesn't always work.

Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong, or what I can do
to work around this problem?

Thanks,
Hope Goering
