Doesn't the IBM XStation attempt to use the same port number as AFS?
I think it uses 7000/tcp whereas the fileserver uses 7000/udp. If
that turns out to be the problem, you should probably complain to IBM.
I understand that we registered our usage of the 7000 ports with the
appropriate governing body, though I don't know any of the details.

A fix for mounting subdirectories of /afs through the AFS/NFS
Translator has been proposed for a future release of AFS. I don't
know if it has been officially tested yet or if it will be included in
the final release of AFS 3.3. For more information, you could send in
the question through the normal support channels.
