What version of AFS and what operating system are you running?
We are using AFS 3.2b on rs_aix32, and we are successfully using an AFS
mail spool directory. Final mail delivery is via bellmail, holding an
appropriate token. I have seen problems with users sending Ctrl-Z to
the standard 'mail' program while it had a lock on the spoolfile. The
delivery daemon would than hang for a long time and eventually say
'Could not lock /usr/spool/mail/user after 1000 seconds.' So to me it
appears that locking is working fine. I also wrote a small C program
'catlocked' to be used from shell scripts which does the same as cat,
but with the ability to lock its input and/or output file. It uses the
AIX lockfx() call. I did some testing with AFS files, but I never found
a situation where I got a lock that I should not have gotten.
