Hmm, I just spoke to a customer who was receiving the same error.
Perhaps you aren't authenticated as a member of system:administrators?
You need to be in that group as well as on the UserList in order to
run backup.  I'm not sure if the documentation makes this point clear,
but I'll look into it.
