I have seen the problem a long time ago with a server on hp700_ux807. The 
client at the time was a DecStation (!) running OSF/1. Some files in the 
directory would simply not be there. I actually reported that to Transarc 
but the didn't have to to chase it through, it must have got lost. The  
and the problem disappeared when using 
an RS6000 as NFS translator. Also, we only saw the problem with the NFS on 
OSF/1, for other machines everything worked fine.

I believe you're on a problem that only appears with a particular NFS 
implementation and the AFS-NFS translator, and which has been around for 
quite some time.
