A followup on my problem with tar + AFS + hp-ux 9.03:
Douglas Robinson of HP wrote a very careful response to my note.
There are several points he raises which may be of general interest.
In paraphrasing, I suspect I am more direct than he was.
(1) The ClearCase filesystem (MVFS) may be officially supported by HP.
In future I might try suggesting that problems be tested in that
environment; similar bugs may appear.
(2) The ultimate cause of my problem is a bug in libc. A new patch
which fixes libc is PHCO_4666. The latest available version of
tar does not incorporate this fix, but the appropriate parties
have now been notified, and a new version of tar should be available
soon.
(3) His note was extremely courteous and sympathetic. If only the
response centres could be as helpful! (Actually the response
centre was courteous and sympathetic as well, simply unhelpful.)
I am sorry that it is necessary to use this list and similar lists to
reach the appropriate persons inside HP, but at least there is a
way of doing so. Many thanks to all who replied, and especially to
